AN INVITATION

You can participate in the exciting task of constructing and maintaining the Camp Ford Historical Center. Unlike a battle site, which may have played an important historical role for a single day or even for only a few hours, Camp Ford had a continuous active life of almost three years in which the lives of thousands of soldiers of both governments were profoundly affected. The civilian population of Tyler also felt the stress of continual rumors of impending breakouts from a camp whose inmates often outnumbered the men of the town. Although conditions within the camp were sometimes harsh, there is no stain of puposeful neglect or abuse associated with Camp Ford. It is a unique site of great historical value to those interested in the Civil War, whether they are from the North or the South. Donors and members are earnestly sought.

DONATIONS

Your contribution to the Camp Ford Historical Association, a 501 (c)(3), non-profit organization, will help save our Camp Ford heritage. Contributions may be in cash, or through the gift of securities, stocks, bonds or other personal property In kind contributions of equipment and supplies are also welcomed. All donations are fully deductible up to the limits of the current Internal Revenue Code. The creation of a permanent visitors center at Camp Ford will afford Tyler and Smith County an additional major tourist attraction designed to enhance Tyler’s growing image as a destination tourist location. Camp Ford, was the largest Civil War encampment west of the Mississippi River and is of interest to educators, historians and tourists throughout the United States. The center will be of economic importance to the region, of educational importance to school children of the area and of historical importance to the State and Nation.
