Civil War Library
Books on CD
HTML format -- read offline using your Internet browser

Art Galore! is pleased to offer an entire library of hard-to-find books relating to the War Between the States. These e-books were scanned and digitized from out-of-print books. They include histories of the war and memoirs of famous generals and government leaders, but also unheralded privates and civilians. Written in an era of different sensitivities, some of these books contain ideas and language that could not find a publisher if written today. But they are presented just as written, because altering them would be vandalizing historical treasures.

CAMP FORD: Tyler, Texas, C.S.A
by Robert W. Glover
50 page paperback

Camp Ford was the largest Confederate internment center for U.S. prioners of war west of the Mississippi. In 1964 the definitive history of Camp Ford was published, Camp Ford C.S.A. The Story of Union Prisoners in Texas, by Robert Glover and Lee Lawrence. That book is out of print and is now a collector's item. However, Dr. Glover has written a condensation of the original book entitled Camp Ford: Tyler, Texas, C.S.A. This 50 page booklet contains numerous illustrations and is crowded with information about the camp. The price is $10 postpaid.

You may order this booklet by sending your check for $10 directly to:

Camp Ford Historical Association
P.O. Box 1865

Causes of the War Between the States

Six hundred thousand American soldiers died during the War Between the States. That's more than all our other wars combined. And when you consider how much smaller the population was at that time, it is almost unimaginable. Why? What were they fighting for? Who was responsible for this carnage?

Was it to free the slaves? In part it was toward the end, but that was not so at the start. Was it over tariffs? Partly, but the answer is more complex and yet at heart very simple.

Click the question at the right for the answer.
