Golden Winters, Carl Gorman
This painting, commissioned by R. C. Gorman and is in his estate. It is biographical in nature. The background is of the canyon De Chelly in the winter, for Carl in his senior years. The pattern which weaves in and out over every thing is an Indian design. It symbolizes the Indian way and Carl moves in and out of it. As an artist most of his works (which I saw at that
time) were of horses staked to the ground and fighting to be free. So, I took the horse to be a totem animal for him, and I set it free in a rainbow of light. A Trompe l’oeil photograph of him in WW II as a code talker is “stuck in the frame. And above is a small Eagle feather, a prayer feather, a sign of his commitment.
I have enhanced this image with a very few heavy paint touched on the WW II photo, to help the visual effect of the “fool the eye”. My Giclee'
technician is Tommy Wyatt, and he is a superb craftsman.
